Biography

Varun Singh, MD, is a research scientist at IO Lab. He is a vascular and interventional radiologist at Radiology Associates of Hollywood in Florida. His research connects minimally invasive procedures, medical device development, and cell-based therapies.

Singh was the inaugural recipient of the MESH Incubator Executive Innovation Fellowship under the leadership of Marc Succi, MD, with training in device innovation, commercialization, and executive leadership. At IO Lab, he and vascular surgeon Brandon Gaston co-invented IsletStent, an experimental endovascular device designed to deliver and house insulin-producing islet cells.

He completed his interventional and diagnostic radiology residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2026, after a general surgery internship there in 2021. He earned his MD at Sidney Kimmel Medical College in 2020 through Jefferson’s accelerated BS/MD program and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha.

Research in medical devices and radiology

IsletStent and cell delivery

Singh’s work on IsletStent explores whether an endovascular stent-graft can house pancreatic islets while allowing them to respond to glucose. The team’s 2026 study in the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology reported glucose-responsive insulin secretion in a benchtop perfusion model. The device remains experimental; in vivo testing of immunoisolation, viability, blood-flow effects, and long-term function is needed before clinical translation.

AI in radiology and clinical imaging

His earlier research applied deep learning to radiographs, including the detection of critical feeding-tube malpositions. His publications also include work on neonatal brain perfusion imaging and clinical outcomes. This experience informs his interest in developing and evaluating technologies around clinical problems.
